Chef's Simple Storage Tricks Keep Herbs Fresh for 3 Extra Weeks
Chef's Storage Tricks Keep Herbs Fresh 3 Weeks Longer

A chef has shared simple storage methods that can keep fresh herbs lasting up to three weeks longer, using only common kitchen items. The tips, which vary depending on the type of herb, help maintain freshness and flavour for home cooks.

Soft Herbs: Jar and Plastic Bag Method

Chef Charles Kim, known as Chef Fatty on TikTok, explained in a video that soft herbs like dill, parsley, and coriander should be placed in a jar or container half filled with water, ensuring the stems are soaked. Then, cover the top with a sandwich bag or small plastic bag before refrigerating.

This method creates a high-humidity environment that prevents the herbs from drying out, while the water hydrates the stems. The plastic bag retains moisture, acting like a miniature greenhouse to keep the herbs crisp and protected from the dehydrating air in the fridge.

Hard Herbs: Damp Kitchen Roll Technique

For hard herbs with wooden stems, such as rosemary, mint, and thyme, the chef advises separating the leaves from the stems. Wrap the leaves in a damp piece of kitchen roll and store in the fridge. These herbs can last up to two to three weeks.

According to The Mediterranean Dish, avoid making herbs too wet before storing, as this can cause sliminess and rot. Also, limit exposure to oxygen and light, which can brown leaves or turn them yellow.

Basil Exception

Basil, being a tropical herb, requires different handling. It should not be stored in the fridge, as it can easily burn. Instead, keep it in its original packaging at room temperature in the kitchen.
