Best Time to Water Plants: Morning, Not Evening, Says Expert
Best Time to Water Plants Is Morning, Expert Says

A gardening expert has revealed the optimal time to water plants during hot weather, advising against common practices that can harm vegetation. Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers, emphasised that watering at the wrong time can lead to water waste, plant stress, and even damage.

Why Midday Watering Is Harmful

Watering during the hottest part of the day is a frequent mistake, according to Harlock. The intense sun causes rapid evaporation, meaning much of the water never reaches the roots. This deprives plants of necessary moisture and can stress them. While the belief that water droplets magnify sunlight and scorch leaves is exaggerated, Harlock confirmed that midday watering still has negative effects.

The Best Time to Water

The ideal time for watering is early morning, ideally before 10am. This allows water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots before temperatures rise. Morning watering also reduces the risk of fungal diseases and pest attraction, which are more common with evening watering.

Deep Watering Technique

Harlock recommends deep, infrequent watering rather than daily light sprinkling. Soaking the soil thoroughly a few times a week encourages deeper root growth, making plants more resilient to heat and drought. She advises directing water at the roots, not the leaves, to ensure efficient absorption and minimise disease risk.

By following these guidelines, gardeners can maintain healthy, thriving plants throughout the summer.
