Ayrshire Slimming World members celebrate weight loss at Icons event
Ayrshire Slimming World members celebrate Icons wins

Slimming World members in Irvine gathered for a special Icons competition to celebrate their personal weight-loss achievements, with smiles, celebrations and plenty of inspiration on display.

The event recognised the journeys of members who have not only worked towards their weight-loss goals but have also gained confidence, improved their wellbeing and discovered what they are capable of achieving.

Two winners were chosen from each of Lynsey Ross's Saturday morning sessions at Vineburgh Community Centre, highlighting that every journey is different and success is about more than a number on the scales.

Winners share their stories

Among the winners were Scott Miller, Stacey Jones, Ryan Lynch and Seonaid Brander, whose stories demonstrate the power of taking the first step, finding the right support and making lasting changes.

Scott has lost 2st 1lb in just two months. He said: "Two stone down, and I can honestly feel the difference. I feel happier, more confident, and more like myself again. I'm so proud of how far I've come, and this is only the beginning of becoming the person I know I can be, with the support of Slimming World."

Stacey, a member for two years, has lost 5st 4lb. Her journey has opened new opportunities, including work as a dance instructor and performer, alongside gaining sports and fitness qualifications. She said: "I didn't just lose weight, I gained strength and confidence. Slimming World helped transform my health and mindset. Now as a dance instructor/performer and gaining my sport and fitness qualifications, I'm proof that consistency on plan and believing in yourself can change your life."

Overcoming nerves and finding support

Ryan's experience highlights the nerves and uncertainty that can come with asking for help. Having struggled to motivate himself for six years, he nearly turned back before entering Vineburgh Community Centre for the first time, worried about joining a group of strangers and following a strict diet.

Three months later, having lost 3st 4 1/2lb, Ryan said: "I was hesitant to join, and almost turned back home the first day practically outside the Vineburgh, because seeking help is something I rarely do. I dreaded the thought of some strict diet, telling myself I could slim down on my own, even though I hadn't motivated myself properly for six years. As well as a hesitancy in doing so in front of strangers. But it's not a diet or a chore, it's a lifestyle plan that I have taken entirely at my own pace. I just turn up, get weighed, join in a friendly group conversation where everyone has their own targets, but we all have one shared common goal. The pressure-free structure changes everything, and it has been 100 per cent worth it for me, three months later and three stone lighter."

Seonaid, a member for four months, has lost 10 1/2lb and credits the encouragement from her group with helping her stay motivated. She said: "Having a great inspirational consultant is the first thing that helps keep me motivated and want to stay on track. Also knowing that I'm doing this for my own health and only 'I' can help myself. Having so much help and support from my Slimming World group in Vineburgh, and by going to group week in week out, I pick up tips and ideas and get the support I need from people who understand. I also get through the week support from our WhatsApp and Facebook groups that are a really good motivational tool!"

Consultant's pride and next steps

Lynsey said: "I'm incredibly proud of every one of our Icons. Their stories show that there is no single way to succeed and no perfect time to start. Some people come through our doors feeling nervous, others have been trying to make changes for years, and some are looking for a fresh start. What they all have in common is the courage to take that first step. What makes our group special is that nobody has to do this alone. We share ideas, learn from one another, have a laugh, pick each other up when things feel difficult and celebrate every achievement along the way. It's never just about the weight someone loses, it's about the confidence they gain, the habits they build and how they feel about themselves. I hope our Icons inspire anyone who has been thinking about joining us to realise that they can do it, too. You don't need to wait until Monday, until after a special occasion or until you feel ready. You can start exactly where you are, and we'll be there to support you."

Lynsey's Saturday morning groups meet at Vineburgh Community Centre, Irvine, at 8am and 9.30am, offering a friendly, welcoming and non-judgemental space for people to work towards their own goals.
