Alan Titchmarsh's Vital Check for Watering Potted Plants
Alan Titchmarsh: Check Soil Before Watering Pots

Alan Titchmarsh has urged gardeners with plants in pots to perform one vital check before reaching for the watering can. As the UK experiences hot and sunny weather, gardens require more attention than ever, but the gardening expert warns that more water is not always better.

The Importance of Checking Soil Moisture

In his Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh video, the horticulturist explained that container plants need special care because rainwater often runs off the foliage without reaching the soil. He said: "When it comes to container plants, you really are playing god. Although rain can fall down, it won't really water them terribly well."

Titchmarsh advises gardeners to insert two fingers into the compost to check moisture levels. "Get down there, dig into the compost. Use your fingers to scoop down underneath," he said. Demonstrating on one of his own pots, he found that although the surface appeared dry, the compost was "perfectly damp" two inches below. He added: "It doesn't actually need any more water. If it is damp two inches down, leave it alone. If it is dry, give it a really good soak."

Proper Watering Techniques for Large Plants

For larger plants, Titchmarsh recommends placing the hose or watering can in the middle of the pot to ensure water reaches the roots rather than running off the leaves. Plants that love moisture can still be watered freely, as they cannot be overwatered.

Recommended Flowers for Summer Colour

Previously, Titchmarsh shared his top choice for an easy-care flower that provides a "summer of colour": Osteospermum, also known as African or Cape daisies. These perennials produce long-lasting blooms from summer into autumn. "Osteospermum is a perennial, but it is tender. In the mildest gardens, those by the sea in the south west of England, they can come through the winter," he said, recommending planting them in mid to late May.
