Wegovy Weight Loss Pills: Who Cannot Buy Them in UK?
Wegovy Pills: Who Is Banned From Buying Them in UK?

As of July 6, 2026, Wegovy weight loss pills are available for purchase from high street and online pharmacies in the UK. They are the first pill of their kind to receive approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in June 2026, offering an alternative to Wegovy injections. However, the pills are not yet available through the NHS, and even those paying out of pocket may be ineligible due to strict eligibility criteria similar to those for the injectable version.

Eligibility Requirements for Wegovy Pills

The tablets can be prescribed to adults in the UK who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above.
  • Have a BMI of 27 or above and at least one weight-related comorbidity.

BMI is calculated by comparing height to weight. While the metric has been criticised for not distinguishing between fat mass and muscle mass, it remains widely used in healthcare as a benchmark. The NHS provides a free online BMI calculator that requires height and weight input. Those who do not meet the BMI threshold are unlikely to be permitted to buy the medication.

Consultation and Availability

Individuals seeking Wegovy pills must undergo a consultation, which can be conducted online or in person, to ensure the medication is appropriate for them, according to the BBC. The new pill has launched at Boots Online Doctor and other pharmacies. Boots reported that nearly two-thirds of people who completed consultations will be able to access the weight loss pills for the first time.

Dr. Anju Verma, Clinical Lead for Weight Loss at Boots Online Doctor, stated: "Having an effective oral treatment available gives customers and healthcare professionals greater choice when considering the most appropriate treatment approach. Weight management is not one-size-fits-all, and expanding the range of clinically proven options at different price points allows treatment decisions to be tailored more closely to an individual's preferences, lifestyle and clinical needs."

Dr. Verma added: "It's important to remember that weight loss medications are not a quick fix. Whether taken as a pill or an injection, the best outcomes are achieved when treatment is combined with healthy lifestyle changes, appropriate clinical assessment, patient education and ongoing medical supervision. Medication can be a valuable tool, but it works best as part of a broader, long-term approach to weight management."

Comparison to Wegovy Injection

The Wegovy pill is a tablet version of the Wegovy injection, which is already available on the NHS for those referred to a weight management service by their GP. Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and studies have found them to be "similarly effective" for weight loss. However, the pills require a strict routine: users must not eat for eight hours before taking the pill and must take it at the same time each day.

The cost of Wegovy tablets depends on the dosage and treatment plan, but it is hoped that in the long run, they may be cheaper than injections. Patients are urged to obtain the medication only from trusted sources due to increasing concerns about counterfeit or fake pills.
