Summer Bedding Must Be Washed at 40°C to Kill Dust Mites, Expert Warns
Wash Summer Bedding at 40°C to Kill Dust Mites

An expert has revealed that summer bedding should be washed at 40°C, not 30°C, to effectively eliminate dust mites and bacteria. Judith Ackers, bed specialist at Land of Beds, advises washing sheets at least once a week during warmer months, and twice a week for hot sleepers or allergy sufferers.

Why 30°C Isn't Enough

Washing at 30°C may leave sheets feeling clean, but it fails to remove sweat and oils that accumulate in summer. Ackers recommends 40°C as the minimum, with occasional 60°C washes for bedding that can tolerate it, to kill bacteria and dust mites. Always check the care label first.

Summer Bedding Needs More Care

In winter, bedding stays fresher longer due to less perspiration. But in summer, lighter clothing and increased sweating mean oils and dead skin build up quickly, creating a perfect breeding ground for dust mites. Ackers notes: "Your summer bedding is working overtime and needs a little extra love to stay fresh."

Drying Tips and Common Mistakes

Air drying in sunlight uses UV rays to kill lingering germs and is environmentally friendly. However, those with allergies or hay fever should dry indoors or use a tumble dryer to avoid irritation. One common mistake is overloading the washing machine. Ackers warns: "If it's got too much in it, your sheets won't wash or rinse properly, and you might end up with detergent left behind."

Towels and Fabric Conditioner

Towels also benefit from hot water washes to kill germs. Some experts suggest replacing fabric conditioner with white vinegar to strip away soap residue.
