The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has outlined who can receive a free flu vaccine through the NHS this winter. All eligible individuals can get the vaccine from 1 October 2026.
Who qualifies for a free flu jab?
In a recent Facebook post, the UKHSA confirmed that the flu jab is offered each autumn or winter to those at greatest risk of serious illness. It said: "Maybe you're pregnant, work on the frontline in health or social care, or are aged 65 or over. Whatever eligible group you fall into, you're entitled to extra protection against the serious illness that flu can cause."
You can get the free NHS flu vaccine if you:
- are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by March 31, 2027)
- are pregnant
- live in a care home
- are aged 18 to 64 and have certain long-term health conditions
- are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer's allowance
- are experiencing homelessness or staying in a homeless hostel or night shelter
- live with someone who has a weakened immune system
What are the symptoms of flu?
Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include feeling tired or exhausted, a sudden high temperature, a dry cough, a sore throat, a headache, loss of appetite, an aching body, and difficulty sleeping.
Children's symptoms are largely the same, although they may additionally suffer from earache, sore eyes, swollen glands and reduced energy levels.
