Third of Brits Ignore Cancer Signs: 8 Symptoms to Watch
Third of Brits Ignore Cancer Signs: 8 Symptoms

A third of Brits who experienced eight 'red flag' cancer symptoms did not see their GP for six months, according to new research from Cancer Research UK. Even among those who did visit their GP, a worrying 43% did not follow up if symptoms persisted.

Early Diagnosis Crucial

An early cancer diagnosis can lead to less invasive treatment and higher survival rates. Over 90% of urgent GP referrals are not cancer, but the same symptoms can indicate other serious conditions.

Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "Nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime, that's why it's so important to spot cancer early - when treatment is more likely to be successful."

Eight Red Flag Symptoms

  • A change in the appearance of a mole
  • An unexplained lump or swelling
  • Unexplained bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Blood in pee or poo
  • Persistent difficulty swallowing
  • Losing weight without trying to
  • Coughing up blood

Having these symptoms does not guarantee cancer, but they warrant a GP check.

Barriers to Seeking Help

The research identified key barriers: difficulty getting an appointment, choosing to manage symptoms alone, or having other priorities.

Tesco Partnership

Cancer Research UK has partnered with Tesco to address these barriers. Tesco pharmacists, trained by Cancer Research UK, offer support in over 350 large stores. Tom Lye, Tesco Health & Wellness Category Director, said: "Tesco pharmacists are often a convenient and trusted first point of contact... we're making it easier for them to have health conversations in a private setting without needing to book an appointment."

Mitchell added: "Support is there for people who notice something that's not right for them... we hope will save lives."
