RSPCA Warns Pet Owners: Protect White-Furred Pets from Sunburn
RSPCA Warns: Protect White-Furred Pets from Sunburn

The RSPCA has issued a timely warning for pet owners as the UK experiences scorching temperatures during the latest heatwave. While many are aware of sun safety for humans, the charity emphasizes that pets also require protection from the sun's harmful rays.

Cats at Risk: Sunburn and Skin Cancer

In a Facebook video, the RSPCA highlighted that cats can suffer from sunburn and even skin cancer. A team member demonstrated how to apply pet-safe sunscreen, advising owners to choose a product free from perfumes and harmful chemicals, with at least SPF 30. The process involves helping the cat get accustomed to the bottle and gentle touch, then applying a pea-sized amount to the ears and nose. Distraction with treats or playtime prevents licking. Shade and water are essential on hot days.

Vulnerable Breeds: White or Light-Coloured Fur

The charity stressed that cats with white or light-coloured fur are particularly vulnerable to the sun. Using pet-safe sunscreen on exposed skin, such as ear tips and nose, can help prevent sunburn and skin cancer.

General Pet Safety Tips

The RSPCA also shared advice for all pet owners during hot weather:

  • Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed skin
  • Ensure access to shade
  • Provide constant fresh water
  • Add ice cubes to water bowls
  • Offer damp towels for lying on

Dogs, especially those with white or light fur, are also susceptible to sunburn. The RSPCA recommends applying pet-safe sunscreen to ears and nose, and consulting a vet for product advice.
