11 Hacks to Get Kids to Wear Sunscreen and Why It's Vital

Why Sunscreen for Children is Critically Important

While most adults recognise the necessity of regular sunscreen use, applying it to young children often becomes a daily battle fraught with resistance and tantrums. Transforming this essential task into a positive, enjoyable habit can yield significant long-term benefits for a child's health.

In anticipation of Melanoma Awareness Month this May, medical experts have emphasised the absolute importance of properly protecting children from the sun's harmful rays. Dr Ross Perry, a GP and medical director of Cosmedics, provides a stark warning.

"Children's skin is far more delicate and vulnerable than adult skin," explains Dr Perry. "The outer protective barrier isn't fully developed, which allows ultraviolet radiation to penetrate more easily and cause damage at a deeper cellular level. A substantial proportion of lifetime sun damage actually occurs before the age of 18."

Dr Perry highlights a sobering statistic: "Even a handful of serious sunburns during childhood can markedly increase the risk of developing skin cancers, including melanoma, later in life."

Sun Protection is a Year-Round Necessity

Dr Tina Tian, a consultant dermatologist at Stratum Dermatology Clinic Oxford, concurs and reminds parents that sun protection extends far beyond beach holidays and summer months.

"When the UV index rises above two, that is precisely when you must protect your children against skin cancer," states Dr Tian. "I ask my Alexa every morning for the local UV index forecast, but you can also check online or via weather applications. Even during some days in March this year, we experienced UV indices of four and above. I recommend monitoring it from March through October as an absolute minimum."

11 Expert-Backed Hacks for Easier Sunscreen Application

Convinced of the 'why' but struggling with the 'how'? Here are eleven practical, expert-recommended strategies to make applying sunscreen to young children a smoother, more manageable process.

1. Integrate It Into the Daily Routine

"Make it part of the daily routine rather than an optional extra," advises Dr Perry. "If it's treated with the same non-negotiable status as brushing teeth, it becomes an ingrained habit."

2. Involve Children in the Selection Process

"Allowing children to choose their own sunscreen—be it a roll-on, spray, or one with fun packaging—grants them a valuable sense of control," says Dr Perry.

3. Opt for Non-Stinging Formulations

Dr Tian advises: "Sunscreen stinging the eyes is a major deterrent. Seek out products explicitly labelled as 'non-stinging.' The P20 formula is excellent due to its high water resistance, meaning it doesn't migrate into the eyes."

4. Transform Application Into a Game

"Make it more engaging by turning the process into a game, perhaps using songs," recommends Dr Perry. Dr Tian adds: "I often ask my daughter what kind of face she wants me to 'paint' with the sunscreen to make it fun."

5. Explain the 'Why' with Age-Appropriate Language

"It's crucial to explain why sunscreen matters using language they understand," says Dr Tian. "For younger children, use kids' books about moles. For older ones, employ more mature educational resources." Dr Perry suggests: "For little ones, explain that sunscreen is like an 'invisible shield' protecting their skin."

6. Make It a Reciprocal Activity

"With my son, I find it helpful to let him apply sunscreen on me first," shares Dr Tian. "It becomes a reciprocal exchange: he does it for me, then I'm allowed to do it for him."

7. Allocate Ample Time for Application

"Always leave enough time to apply sunscreen calmly before leaving home," advises Dr Tian. "Rushing increases the risk of getting it in their eyes, which can be traumatic and create future resistance. Set aside five dedicated minutes to apply it slowly."

8. Let Them Play with the Lids

"Many sunscreen bottles have lids. Draw funny faces on them and let your children play with the lid while you apply the cream," suggests Dr Tian.

9. Warm the Sunscreen in Your Hands First

"Sunscreen can feel very cold. Warming it slightly in your hands before application prevents it from being a shock to their system," recommends Dr Tian.

10. Select a Lighter Texture

"Many children dislike thick, sticky formulas," notes Dr Perry. "Opting for lightweight, quick-absorbing sunscreens designed for sensitive or paediatric skin can make a tremendous difference in compliance."

11. Model the Behaviour Yourself

"Children are far more likely to accept sunscreen if they see their parents applying it consistently," concludes Dr Perry. "For children, this is about building lifelong protective habits that will safeguard their skin for decades to come."
