Keep Squirrels Out of Your Garden with Coffee Grounds They Hate
Repel Squirrels Naturally with Coffee Grounds in Your Garden

Despite their cute appearance, squirrels are wild animals that can wreak havoc in gardens. They damage trees, eat flower buds, bulbs, fruits, vegetables, and disturb bird feeders. Since wild animals stay where food is available, removing all nuts, fruits, and fungi is ideal but often impractical. Homeowners must take matters into their own hands.

Why Squirrels Are a Problem

Squirrels can also damage property by nibbling through wires and woodwork, or tearing insulation and plasterboard. To keep these creatures away, Jordan Foster, a pest control specialist at Fantastic Pest Control, shares expert tips.

Natural Deterrents That Work

Jordan notes that squirrels have strong aversions to certain scents. "They simply cannot tolerate some smells," he says, with coffee grounds being a prime example. He suggests spreading used coffee grounds along garden borders. "Squirrels hate the smell and will run away and won't come back."

To keep the grounds in place and intensify the scent, add a splash of water. Test a small, discreet patch first to ensure plants aren't adversely affected. Coffee grounds may also deter cats and rats.

Other Effective Methods

The experts at Love The Garden recommend using chilli flakes. "Squirrels can't stand hot, spicy flavours, so a liberal scattering could help deter them." They also suggest planting abundant mint, as "squirrels find peppermint too strong for their sensitive noses."

Always check local regulations before applying pest-deterring mixtures in your outdoor spaces.
