Pharmacist Rebecca, known as The Mama Pharmacist, has shared six effective steps to manage hay fever symptoms this summer, emphasizing that over-the-counter remedies can prevent misery. Hay fever, affecting many with sneezing, itchy mouth, and dry eyes, often leads to canceled plans and pollen avoidance.
Oral Antihistamines for Sneezing and Runny Nose
Rebecca recommends oral antihistamines for sneezing, itchy nose, and runny nose. She stresses taking them daily during hay fever season, not just when symptoms start, to avoid suffering. Non-drowsy antihistamines allow normal daily activities without feeling lethargic.
Steroid Nasal Sprays for Blocked Nose
Steroid nasal sprays are the most effective for blocked noses and also help runny noses, according to Rebecca. They must be used daily for best results but are not instant; they can take a few days to start working and up to two weeks for full benefit.
Eye Drops for Itchy, Watery Eyes
Eye drops are recommended for itchy, watery, or red eyes. They work best when used regularly and can be combined with antihistamines and nasal sprays for a comprehensive approach to hay fever relief.
Saline Sprays and Rinses
Rebecca describes saline sprays and rinses as underrated but effective. They wash pollen out of the nose, reduce irritation, and are safe for multiple daily use. She advises using them before steroid sprays for maximum absorption.
Decongestant Sprays for Fast Relief
Decongestant sprays provide fast relief for a blocked nose but should only be used for a maximum of three to five days. Prolonged use can cause rebound congestion and worsen symptoms. Rebecca considers them a last resort when other methods fail.
Vaseline to Trap Pollen
Applying a thin layer of Vaseline around the nostrils helps trap pollen before it enters the nose, Rebecca says. She concludes that hay fever doesn't have to take over summer and urges sufferers to take action with these proven remedies.
