A Merseyside hospital could soon have a new facility for patients detained under the Mental Health Act. The Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has submitted plans to Wirral Council for a new purpose-built space where patients would be managed at Arrowe Park Hospital.
Proposed Facility Details
The proposed site would include accommodation for the assessment and short-term management of those detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act. The site would also feature two secure garden areas and a gated parking facility. Two new entrance canopies would be constructed to provide shelter from poor weather while approaching the site. A new access ramp would be carefully integrated into the design.
Location and Sustainability
The new Crisis Assessment Centre unit would be established within the hospital's existing footprint, meaning the works would largely be internal. The unit would occupy the southern part of what is currently the Discharge Hospitality Centre. Plans indicate the location is well connected to estate roads and access routes. Reusing an existing part of the hospital makes the scheme more sustainable, according to plans. Documents submitted to the council state that the proposals align with NHS estate objectives for modernisation, efficiency, and responsible use of existing assets.
Design and Safety Features
The new unit would incorporate anti-ligature design principles, meaning fixtures would be designed to reduce the risk of self-harm or suicide. The layout would comply with relevant HBN and HTM standards. Outdoor areas would include planting and seating, creating a therapeutic space, according to plans. Detailed landscaping plans would be submitted at a later date.
The plans will now be decided upon by Wirral Council.
