Health authorities in Los Angeles have issued an urgent warning after a visitor with measles spent 11 hours at Universal Studios Hollywood, potentially exposing thousands of visitors to the highly contagious virus.
The infected person visited the theme park on Sunday, July 26, between 10am and 9pm, and was contagious throughout their stay. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is working to trace and notify anyone who may have come into contact with the individual.
High Risk of Exposure
Universal Studios Hollywood attracts around 9.6 million visitors annually, roughly 26,000 per day, making it a popular destination for British holidaymakers. Officials caution that thousands may have been exposed.
Measles is considered the most contagious disease on the planet, infecting up to nine in 10 unvaccinated people exposed. The virus spreads through droplets from coughs or sneezes and can linger in the air for up to two hours.
Vaccination Urged
Dr Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, "With summer travel underway, the risk of exposure to infectious diseases may increase. We urge everyone to confirm their immunity and get the MMR vaccine if needed, especially before travelling and attending crowded events."
The MMR vaccine is the most effective defence, reducing measles risk by about 97% after two doses. Symptoms include high temperature, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a distinctive rash that spreads from the face.
Serious complications can occur, especially in babies, pregnant women, and unvaccinated individuals, including pneumonia, brain inflammation, and rarely death. Anyone developing symptoms is advised to stay home, avoid public spaces, and contact healthcare providers by phone before visiting a clinic.
