BBC Wales Today presenter Lucy Owen has shared a health update with fans after she was rushed to hospital for major eye surgery, thanking the NHS for saving her sight.
Emergency surgery and recovery
On Tuesday (July 21), the 54-year-old broadcaster took to Instagram to post a photograph from her hospital bed, beaming as she sported a makeshift eyepatch. She was pictured with a cotton pad covering her left eye, shielded with a plastic guard and fastened with scotch tape.
She captioned the post: "All done. Yet another huge thank you to the NHS for the wonderful care I've had." She added: "Mr Williams and his team saved my sight just over a year ago, and now they're helping improve it. So very grateful always. A bit of time to recover, then back on your telly next week. Limited makeup is allowed, so you may want to go sound-only!"
Previous on-air incident
In May, Owen was delivering the headlines on BBC Wales Today when she was struck by a coughing fit. She was forced to hand over to weather presenter Derek Brockway. She later apologized on Instagram, writing: "This has only happened to me once before, and it's an awful feeling. I really didn't think I was going to get to the end of the story. Fine during rehearsal, but it just came out of the blue. If you were watching huge apologies, at least you got most of your news croak and cough-free."
Career background
Owen began her career at BBC Radio Wales as a researcher and is married to Welsh presenter Rhodri Owen. She joined HTV Wales in 1995 as a newsreader before fronting Wales Tonight. She later presented on the ITV News Channel and main ITV News. In 2007, she switched to the BBC and began presenting BBC Wales Today, also fronting the consumer programme X Ray.
