GP: Swap biscuits for oatcakes to lower heart disease risk

GP Dr Samantha Wild, clinical lead at Bupa Health UK, has advised swapping biscuits for oatcakes topped with apple and peanut butter to reduce the risk of heart disease. The simple dietary change can lower saturated fat intake, support healthy cholesterol levels, and prevent weight gain.

Simple swap for better heart health

Dr Wild explained that many biscuits, chocolates, and sugary snacks are high in added sugar and saturated fat. Frequent consumption can lead to raised cholesterol, weight gain, and increased risk of conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. These snacks are also low in fibre, leaving people unsatisfied and reaching for more.

More than eight million people in the UK live with cardiovascular disease, and around 80% of cases are preventable, according to health experts.

Oatcakes: a fibre-rich alternative

Dr Wild recommended oatcakes as a healthier alternative. Topped with apple and peanut butter, they provide fibre, natural sweetness, protein, and unsaturated fats. Oats contain beta-glucan, which supports healthy cholesterol levels. Apple adds vitamins and antioxidants, while peanut butter helps maintain steady energy levels.

Fruit instead of chocolate

For those craving chocolate or sweets, Dr Wild suggested a small handful of fresh or dried fruit. Fruit contains natural sugars but also provides fibre, vitamin C, and potassium. It supports digestive health, helps meet the five-a-day target, and keeps blood sugar levels steadier than highly processed sugary snacks.

Occasional substitutions can make a real difference to heart health, weight management, and overall wellbeing. There is no need to eliminate biscuits and chocolate entirely, but small swaps can help maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
