Free NHS flu jab 2026: who qualifies and how to book

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed who is eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine ahead of winter 2026. All those who qualify can receive the flu vaccine as of October 1, 2026.

Influenza, more commonly known as flu, is a widespread illness that strikes suddenly. While most people recover without needing medical treatment, some individuals can become seriously ill. The majority of those who catch flu will be better within a few days to just under a fortnight, although some may go on to develop complications such as pneumonia, which can prove fatal in certain cases.

Who is eligible for a free flu jab?

You can receive the free NHS flu vaccine if you are aged 65 or over, including those who will be 65 by March 31, 2027. Pregnant women, people living in a care home, and those aged 18 to 64 with certain long-term health conditions also qualify.

Other eligible groups include the main carer for an older or disabled person, or those receiving a carer's allowance. People experiencing homelessness or staying in a homeless hostel or night shelter, and those who live with someone who has a weakened immune system, are also entitled to the free vaccine.

Flu symptoms and how to book

Flu symptoms develop very rapidly and can include feeling tired or exhausted, a sudden high temperature, a dry cough, loss of appetite, an aching body, difficulty sleeping, a sore throat, and a headache.

Those who are eligible can book a free flu vaccine online, via the NHS app, or over the phone by calling 119 free of charge. Walk-in appointments are also available at pharmacies. A textphone service (18001) and the NHS 119 British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter service are available for those with communication or hearing difficulties.
