ER Doctor Warns Phones Are the 'Most Dangerous Thing' for Kids at Beach
ER Doctor: Phones Most Dangerous for Kids at Beach

Dr Samantha Reeder, a board-certified emergency medicine physician and mother of two toddlers, has issued a stark warning to parents about the most dangerous thing for children at the beach: the parent's phone. In a recent Instagram reel on her account @adventureswithdrmom, she shared a clip of two toddlers playing in the sand and asked followers to identify the greatest hazard.

Drowning Is Silent and Quick

Reeder revealed that the answer is the phone she was filming on. 'I'm an ER doctor, and drowning is silent — no splashing, no screaming, nothing like the movies. It takes about 20 seconds. Long enough to film one video,' she wrote in the caption. The post has garnered over 7,000 likes and 2,000 comments.

Assign a 'Water Watcher'

Reeder advised parents to assign a 'Water Watcher': one adult with no phone, eyes fixed on the children, swapping every 15 minutes or a reasonable interval. 'That's the whole job,' she emphasized. Many commenters initially guessed other dangers such as the tide, lack of floatation devices, or inadequate sun protection, but others correctly identified the phone distraction.

One commenter noted, 'The mother taking the video is likely paying more attention to the phone than her kids.' Another echoed, 'Your phone. Aka no eyes on kids.' Reeder's warning comes as many UK families plan beach trips during the summer holidays and recent sunny weather.
