Emmerdale's Cain Dingle has reversed his decision to refuse further treatment for his prostate cancer, following the diagnosis of his beloved dog Monty. The character, played by Jeff Hordley, initially rejected radiotherapy after learning his cancer had spread post-surgery, citing concerns over quality of life. However, after Monty was diagnosed with an aggressive metastatic tumor, Cain reconsidered.
Cain's Initial Refusal
After a radical prostatectomy, Cain and his wife Moira (Natalie J Robb) were told the cancer had spread. His consultant recommended radiotherapy, but Cain fiercely refused, arguing about the impact on his quality of life and not wanting his family to watch him suffer.
Monty's Diagnosis Changes Everything
On Wednesday (July 8), Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) visited Wishing Well to update the family on Monty, who had inhaled smoke from a fire started by Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn). Paddy confirmed the dog had a metastatic tumor, with a growth on the spleen that had spread to the lungs. Sam Dingle (James Hooton) bluntly asked if Monty would die, and Paddy nodded, adding it was an aggressive form. Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) asked about quality of life; Paddy said with the right treatments, they could keep him comfortable.
Cain responded pointedly, 'Being comfortable isn't the same as living, though, is it?'—a remark that seemed to reflect his own situation.
A Heartfelt Decision
Later, Cain picked up Monty from the vet, where Paddy urged him to cherish every moment. Cain decided to give Monty more time for 'one last knees-up,' but vowed to stop when the dog became uncomfortable. Then, tentatively, he said, 'Then maybe we can all agree about something else...' hinting at reconsidering radiotherapy for himself.
He told his family: 'When the time comes, if I need it, I'm gonna have it. Someone's made me realise I've got options. And I should take them whilst I still can.' Moira, emotional, hugged him tightly.
