A naturopathic doctor has warned that plug-in air fresheners may be the most toxic item in the home, linking them to allergies, itchy eyes, upper respiratory infections, and asthma.
Dr Pedi Mirdamadi shared the warning on TikTok, claiming that many of these products contain toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds, which enter the body through breathing.
Doctor's Warning on Air Fresheners
"Many of these products contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde as well as volatile, organic compounds, which enter our bodies through our breath," he said. "The air we breathe is the quickest and easiest way to get toxins into our body."
He advised: "If you have any of these plug-in air fresheners in your home or in your car - switch them off and dump them, especially if you're experiencing any signs of allergies or asthma."
In his video's caption, Dr Mirdamadi suggested using an essential oil diffuser instead, but cautioned dog owners to avoid this alternative. He also mentioned that he unplugs air fresheners in Ubers and informs drivers of his allergies.
Health Risks and Official Guidance
While not all plug-in air fresheners contain formaldehyde directly in their liquid oils, they can still release it into the air. Formaldehyde is a toxic irritant and a known human carcinogen at sufficient exposure levels, particularly in small, poorly ventilated rooms.
The government website states: "Formaldehyde has been classified as a cancer-causing chemical in humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)." However, it adds: "Low-level exposure from the correct use of these products would not be expected to cause adverse health effects."
Many viewers shared their own alternatives in the comments, including simmering orange peel, cloves, cinnamon, cranberries, or fresh lemons and thyme. Those with health concerns are advised to consult a medical professional.
