Tesco and Lidl have issued an urgent recall for several ham products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a recall notice, warning that the bacteria can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups.
The recall applies to ham products supplied by O'Brien Fine Foods, sold in Northern Ireland. Affected items include various sliced ham and cooked meats. Customers are advised not to consume the products and to return them to the store for a full refund.
Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria, can lead to flu-like symptoms such as high temperature, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhoea. In rare cases, it can cause severe complications like meningitis. Those at higher risk include people over 65, pregnant women, newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The FSA stated: 'If you have bought the above products, do not eat them. Instead, return them to where you bought them from for a full refund.' Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in affected stores.

The NHS advises that most cases of listeriosis are mild and resolve within days, but those at higher risk should seek medical advice. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms such as stiff neck, seizures, or confusion should go to A&E or call 999.
