BBC Breakfast paused its regular programming on Monday morning to broadcast an emotional video message from the Princess of Wales, Catherine, following her completion of the National Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge, undertaken in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, aimed to raise awareness of life beyond a cancer diagnosis and the importance of holistic care.
Princess Catherine Completes Gruelling Challenge
The Princess of Wales, who underwent cancer treatment in 2024 and announced she was in remission earlier this year, climbed the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales over the weekend. The feat involved approximately 23 miles of walking, more than 3,000 metres of climbing, and hundreds of miles of driving between each mountain.
In a video shared by Kensington Palace, Catherine said: "Lots of people have asked me why I'm doing this challenge, and partly it's personal. I'm so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills. But, more importantly, it's to give something back, and acknowledge, really, all the incredible work going on up and down this country."
Emotional Message on Cancer's Impact
Kensington Palace also released a photo of the Princess at the summit of Ben Nevis, accompanied by a heartfelt statement. Catherine wrote: "Cancer doesn't just affect the body. It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life." She added: "I know this personally, and that the journey through and beyond treatment requires more than medicine alone."
Explaining her motivation, she said: "I have taken on the National Three Peaks Challenge, not simply as a physical endeavour but as a chance to explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back."
Holistic Care and Family Support
The Princess emphasised the need for holistic healthcare, stating: "Through this challenge, I want to raise awareness for the deeper impact of serious illness and the importance of holistic healthcare." She noted that every cancer patient's experience is different and that a whole-person approach can help maintain wellbeing, resilience, and quality of life throughout diagnosis and recovery.
At the finish line in Wales, Catherine was joined by her husband, the Prince of Wales, their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as well as her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother James.
Fundraising for Royal Marsden Cancer Charity
The challenge was organised to benefit the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, with funds supporting holistic care alongside medical treatment. Catherine concluded her message by offering support to others affected by cancer: "Together, we can stand alongside everyone navigating life with cancer, ensuring no one faces this disease feeling unseen or unsupported." She signed off with the words: "Please know you are not alone."
