South Lodge Care Home, on Ayr’s Racecourse Road, has been given the thumbs-up following an unannounced visit from the Care Inspectorate.
The care scrutiny body visited the home in May with their findings now published.
Core Assurance Inspection
As this was a core assurance inspection - to provide proof that better performing services continue to deliver care and support that meets people’s needs - no new evaluations (grades) were awarded.
Among the key messages the Care Inspectorate said the home was operating legally and in line with their conditions of registration, including having the appropriate insurance in place and a range of policies and procedures that promoted “good outcomes” for people.
In addition, this meant that people were “safe and protected” from harm and could have “confidence” in the organisation providing their care and support.
Infection Control and Medication
Infection prevention and control practices were “well embedded,” according to the report, while medication management systems were “overall safe and effective.”
The praise continued; the environment was “visibly clean” and staff used personal protective equipment “effectively,” helping reduce the risk of spread of any potential infection, which ensured people “remained safe and well.”
And clear management structures were “in place” with delegated responsibilities, operational reporting and regular meetings which contributed to a “very good level of oversight and accountability.”
Positive Feedback from Residents
South Lodge care home is registered to provide a care service to a maximum of 34 older people.
An extract from the latest Care Inspectorate report said: “Feedback from people and relatives was positive. People told us staff treated them with kindness and supported them to regain confidence and independence. We were assured that people experienced care and support that promoted their independence, improved wellbeing and supported positive health outcomes.”
The report adds: “Some improvements were needed around recording accuracy, medicine labelling and quality assurance oversight. We discussed the benefits of external medication audits to support improvement in medication practice. This would further strengthen medication management systems to ensure they remained compliant with current guidance and legislation.
“Managers took on board this feedback and had actively engaged with their supplying pharmacist to arrange this support.”
