Average time men last during sex by age revealed

Men aged 18-24 last an average of 16.14 minutes during sex, while those over 65 average 8.15 minutes, according to a 2025 study from Lovehoney. The figures, shared by sexual health expert and nurse Sarah Mulindwa, show how session length varies with age.

How long men last by age group

The study breaks down average times across six age brackets. For 25-34 year olds, the average rises to 18.29 minutes, with 21% lasting between 11 and 15 minutes and 15% reaching orgasm in 21 to 30 minutes. Men aged 35-44 see a slight decrease to 17.4 minutes, while those 45-54 average 14.14 minutes, with 25% climaxing in six to 10 minutes.

Between 55 and 64, the average drops to 11.3 minutes, and for those 65 and over, it falls to 8.15 minutes, with the most common time being six to 10 minutes (28%). Notably, 1% of the 65+ group report lasting over an hour.

Expert insights on the numbers

Sarah Mulindwa notes that there is 'really no single “right” number' for how long sex should last. She explains, 'Research shows that session length tends to peak in the late 20s to early 30s and gradually shortens as men get older.' For younger men, she says, 'excitement and novelty are high, which can lead to quicker climaxes, but recovery is fast, and stamina is generally good.'

For men in their 30s, she adds that 'experience, rhythm, and better communication usually make sex feel smoother, though stress or time pressure can shave off minutes.' For older groups, she mentions that 'hormonal changes and early erectile difficulties can affect pace, but many couples naturally focus more on foreplay, variety, and connection.'

What matters most

Despite the averages, Sarah emphasises that 'what matters most at any age is communication, technique, and pleasure – not the stopwatch.' She concludes, 'Overall, the data shows that mid-range sessions (roughly 10-15 minutes) are most common at any age, with very long encounters being rare. But the most important factors are mindset, technique, and communication. Couples who focus on connection, mix up sensations, and communicate openly and consistently can experience higher satisfaction.'
