A new poll reveals a stark gap in UK oral hygiene: 88% of adults do not consistently follow dentist-recommended oral care routines, even though 80% believe they brush properly.
Survey findings
The survey of 2,000 adults found that 63% spend less than the recommended two minutes brushing, 16% brush only once a day, and 74% admit they don't floss daily. Half still use a manual toothbrush instead of an electric one, 11% don't use fluoride toothpaste, and 17% are unsure what type of toothpaste they use.
Expert insight
These habits come as the Oral Health Foundation notes many struggle to access dental care, making home oral care crucial. The foundation also reports that nearly one in four UK adults have untreated tooth decay, and 9% show signs of severe gum disease.
Oral-B commissioned the research for its Brush for Better campaign, which will take a dental bus on a nationwide tour from July to September 2026. After the tour, the bus will be donated to Dentaid - The Dental Charity.
David Ewan, Northern Europe senior director oral care at Oral-B, said: "Good oral health starts with the habits we practice every day at home, yet the research reveals a clear gap between perception and reality when it comes to how people care for their teeth. That's why making expert advice accessible is so important."
Public attitudes
The research also shows oral health is often overlooked compared to other healthy habits: 52% prioritize healthy eating, 47% exercise, but only 37% prioritize dental care. Younger adults are more willing to improve, with 32% of Gen Z saying better guidance would enhance their routine.
Additionally, 35% avoid smiling due to self-consciousness about their teeth, while 48% believe good oral health boosts confidence. Although 77% turn to their dentist for advice, 14% visit less than once a year, and 10% have not seen a dentist in five years. Some even consult AI (10%) or social media (17%) for oral health tips.
Dentist Dr Eva Castro Perea said: "These results show there's still a lack of awareness about what makes an effective oral care routine. Brushing twice a day for two minutes, using an electric toothbrush, flossing every day and replacing your brush head regularly are simple habits that can have a huge impact on oral health over time."
