Swinney: Scottish-Built Child Health Facilities Show 'Solidarity' with Gaza
First Minister John Swinney has declared that paediatric operating theatres being assembled in Scotland for deployment to Palestine demonstrate the nation's "solidarity" with the people enduring immense suffering in Gaza. The statement came during a visit to the Dundee hub of the Scottish charity Kids Operating Room, which specialises in constructing medical equipment for child health facilities in humanitarian crisis zones.
Charity Plans for West Bank and Gaza
The charity has concrete plans to establish paediatric operating rooms in the West Bank within the coming months. Furthermore, it harbours ambitions to construct a more extensive hospital facility in the Gaza Strip, although this project's feasibility is heavily contingent on the volatile political and security situation within the territory.
During his tour of the charity's field readiness hub in Dundee, Mr Swinney was shown detailed plans for the proposed Gaza facility. These plans include dedicated maternity units alongside the surgical theatres, forming a comprehensive healthcare package designed for areas of acute need.
Rapid Deployment Hub in Dundee
The Dundee hub serves as a critical assembly and testing centre for fully functional, self-contained hospital systems. These systems include complete clinical layouts with integrated power supplies, water systems, and ventilation. This innovative approach allows for the rapid deployment of essential medical infrastructure to crisis-hit regions anywhere in the world, bypassing lengthy on-site construction.
A recent demonstration of this capability saw Kids OR successfully install six independent operating theatres in Ukraine. These units are designed to function autonomously from the national power grid, a crucial feature given the frequent blackouts caused by the ongoing war with Russia.
Scottish Government Support and Statements
The Scottish Government has recently bolstered the charity's efforts with a £400,000 funding package. Speaking to the Press Association, First Minister Swinney emphasised the dire situation, stating, "The situation in Gaza is just unbearable, and the suffering of individuals is inconceivable."
He stressed the urgency of the mission, adding, "It's vital that we do all that we can to provide support and services and facilities to try and make sure there's healthcare available to the people in Gaza, particularly to children." He explained that the Kids OR facility is specifically designed to address the severe healthcare needs in Gaza, including treating injuries sustained by children during the conflict.
Mr Swinney framed the initiative as a moral imperative, saying, "It's an example of how we have to act in these situations to demonstrate solidarity with individuals who are suffering around the world. That suffering is highly acute in Gaza. I'm very pleased the Scottish Government is able to support Kids OR in that endeavour."
Charity's Mission and Values
Garreth Wood, co-founder of Kids Operating Room, outlined the charity's driving philosophy. "When health systems collapse, children often suffer the most," he said. "Our field readiness hub is designed to ensure that when crisis strikes, we can act fast and deliver safe healthcare wherever it's needed."
He connected the project's origins to core Scottish values, noting, "Everything about this project speaks to our values: urgency, local partnership and long-term change. We're proud to see this innovation taking shape here in Scotland, and we're even more proud of the impact it will have globally."
