New Covid 'Stratius' Strain Emerges: Key Symptoms Differ From Previous Variants
New Covid 'Stratius' Strain Has Peculiar Symptoms

Health authorities in the UK have identified a new Covid-19 variant, currently known as the 'Stratius' strain, which is demonstrating a peculiar set of symptoms that distinguish it from earlier versions of the virus. While cases are currently low, scientists are closely monitoring its spread and characteristics.

How Stratius Symptoms Differ

According to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the classic Covid symptoms we've become familiar with—such as a loss of taste or smell, a persistent cough, and a high fever—are appearing less frequently in cases linked to the Stratius variant.

Instead, health experts report that the new strain seems to present with a different cluster of signs. The most commonly reported symptoms now include:

  • Fatigue and general weakness
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Gastrointestinal issues (such as nausea or diarrhoea)

This shift means that people might mistake a Covid infection for a common cold or a stomach bug, potentially leading to increased, undetected transmission.

What We Know So Far

The Stratius strain is a descendant of the Omicron lineage and was first flagged by monitoring systems due to its unique genetic markers. Early analysis suggests it may be slightly more transmissible than other currently circulating variants, but there is no evidence yet to indicate it causes more severe illness.

Vaccination remains the best defence against serious disease from all Covid variants. The UKHSA has confirmed that existing vaccines are expected to continue providing good protection against hospitalisation and death from the Stratius strain.

Professor Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Advisor at the UKHSA, stated, "Vigilance is key. We are tracking this variant closely. The public can help by remaining aware of the broader range of symptoms and taking a test if they feel unwell, especially before visiting vulnerable individuals."

What Should You Do?

If you experience any of the symptoms associated with the Stratius strain, health officials recommend the following steps:

  1. Consider taking a lateral flow test to check for Covid-19.
  2. If you test positive, try to limit contact with other people, particularly those who are older or clinically vulnerable.
  3. Ensure you are up to date with your Covid vaccinations, including any booster doses you are eligible for.

While the emergence of new variants is expected, continued surveillance and public awareness are crucial for managing the virus's impact as we learn to live with Covid long-term.
