Britons are being alerted to a surprising and often overlooked symptom of COVID-19: a hoarse voice. According to the latest data from the long-running ZOE Health Study, a sudden change in your voice could be a key indicator of infection, particularly as new variants continue to circulate.
While the NHS's official list of core symptoms remains focused on a high temperature, a new continuous cough, and a loss or change to smell or taste, researchers stress that the virus can manifest in many other ways. A hoarse voice is now joining the ranks of other commonly reported signs like a sore throat, headache, and runny nose.
What Does the Data Show?
The ZOE study, which has collected data from millions of UK users through its app, indicates that a hoarse voice is more than just a side effect of coughing. It appears to be a direct result of the virus affecting the larynx, or voice box. Users reported their voices sounding raspy, strained, or weaker than usual, often appearing in the early stages of the illness.
This symptom is not officially recognised by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), leading to calls for health authorities to update public guidance. Many individuals experiencing only a hoarse voice and other 'non-core' symptoms may not realise they are infected, potentially unknowingly spreading the virus.
Why is This Important Now?
As the virus evolves, the presentation of symptoms has shifted. With many people now having some immunity from vaccinations and prior infections, COVID-19 can sometimes feel more like a common cold. This makes identifying all potential signs, no matter how minor they seem, crucial for making informed decisions about testing and self-isolation.
Professor Tim Spector, co-founder of the ZOE study, has previously emphasised that relying solely on the classic three symptoms means missing a significant number of cases. 'If you're feeling unwell with any combination of symptoms, it's best to take a test to be sure,' he advises.
What Other Symptoms Should You Watch For?
Based on ZOE's findings, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 currently include:
- Sore throat
- Runny or blocked nose
- Headache
- Persistent cough
- Hoarse voice
- Sneezing
- Fatigue
If you develop a hoarse voice alongside any of these, especially if it's unusual for you, it may be prudent to take a lateral flow test to protect those around you.
