Wash Bedding at 40°C in Summer to Remove Sweat and Dust Mites

An expert has shared the exact temperature at which Brits should wash their bedding during the summer to effectively remove sweat and kill dust mites. According to Judith Ackers, bed specialist at Land of Beds, washing at 30°C may leave sheets feeling clean but does not fully shift sweat and oils.

Recommended Washing Temperature and Frequency

Ackers recommends washing bedding at 40°C as a minimum. For those who can tolerate it, a 60°C wash every now and then kills bacteria and dust mites. She advises checking the care label first to avoid damaging the fabric.

In summer, the expert suggests washing bedding at least once a week. Hot sleepers or those with allergies may benefit from washing twice a week. Hot nights lead to more sweat, oils, and dead skin building up in sheets, creating a perfect environment for dust mites and bacteria.

Why Summer Bedding Needs Extra Care

In winter, bedding stays cleaner longer due to less sweat. However, in summer, lighter clothing means sweat and oils soak directly into sheets. Ackers noted: “Your summer bedding is working overtime and needs a little extra love to stay fresh.”

Drying Tips and Common Mistakes

Air drying in sunlight can kill remaining germs with UV rays and is more environmentally friendly than tumble drying. However, for those with allergies or hay fever, indoor or tumble drying is recommended to avoid irritation.

A common mistake is overloading the washing machine. Ackers explained: “If it’s got too much in it, your sheets won’t wash or rinse properly, and you might end up with detergent left behind. Give them some space, and they’ll come out fresher every time.”

Additional Advice for Towels

When washing towels, hot water is also important to kill germs. Some experts suggest replacing fabric conditioner with white vinegar to remove soap suds.
