In an emotional revelation, Paula Hudgell - the adoptive mother of inspirational double amputee Tony Hudgell - has disclosed her own battle with cancer while continuing to support her son's remarkable journey.
The devoted mother shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, undergoing a mastectomy and facing ongoing treatment. Despite her personal health challenges, Paula remains focused on caring for Tony, the 9-year-old who captured the nation's heart with his resilience.
A Family's Extraordinary Strength
Tony, who lost both legs as a baby due to horrific abuse by his birth parents, has become a symbol of courage after learning to walk on prosthetics and raising over £1.8 million for charity through his challenges.
"It's been a tough year," Paula admitted. "But Tony keeps me going. His determination inspires me every day." The family recently celebrated Tony receiving a British Empire Medal for his fundraising efforts.
Facing the Future Together
Paula described the moment she received her diagnosis: "My first thought was Tony - who would look after him? But we're a strong family, and we'll get through this together."
She continues to manage Tony's busy schedule of hospital appointments, physiotherapy, and school while undergoing her own treatment. "Tony doesn't fully understand," Paula explained, "but he knows Mummy has poorly boo-boos too now."
Community Support
The Hudgell family has been overwhelmed by messages of support since sharing Paula's diagnosis. "People's kindness reminds us why we fought so hard for Tony's Law," she said, referencing the legislation increasing sentences for child abusers that bears Tony's name.
As Paula faces further treatment, she remains determined: "We've beaten the odds before. This is just another mountain to climb."
