Oncologist Issues Warning Over 'Phantom Shoulder Pain' as Potential Liver Cancer Red Flag
A strange, persistent ache in your shoulder might not stem from a gym injury or poor posture—it could be an early indicator of liver cancer, medical experts have cautioned. This "phantom" pain, typically felt on the right side, is a little-known symptom that often goes unnoticed or dismissed, even as liver cancer rates surge in the United Kingdom.
Rising Incidence and Vague Symptoms Pose Challenges
Approximately 6,000 individuals are diagnosed with liver cancer annually in the UK, with incidence rates climbing by more than 40% over the past ten years. This makes it one of the fastest-growing cancers in the nation. Despite this alarming trend, the disease's symptoms are frequently vague and easily overlooked, complicating early detection efforts.
Dr Jiri Kubes, medical director at the Proton Therapy Center, highlighted the issue, stating, "Liver cancer can sometimes cause what we refer to as referred or phantom pain, where discomfort manifests in the shoulder rather than the abdomen." He explained that this occurs due to the liver's proximity to nerves connected to the shoulder, allowing irritation to be perceived elsewhere in the body.
Understanding the 'Phantom' Pain Phenomenon
The pain associated with liver cancer is usually experienced on the right-hand side and may fluctuate in intensity, leading many to attribute it to muscular strain or physical activity. Dr Kubes noted that patients, particularly those who are otherwise fit and active, often assume it results from exercise or posture issues, delaying crucial medical consultation.
Liver cancer has emerged as one of the fastest-rising causes of cancer-related deaths in the UK, with lifestyle factors playing a significant role in its increase. Key risk factors include:
- Long-term alcohol consumption
- Obesity and fatty liver disease
- Hepatitis B and C infections
- Smoking
Many cases are linked to underlying liver damage that develops silently over years, underscoring the importance of early symptom recognition.
Preventable Nature and Additional Warning Signs
Dr Kubes emphasised the subtlety of initial symptoms, saying, "The challenge with liver cancer is that symptoms can be very subtle at first, which is why people often ignore them or attribute them to something harmless." However, the good news is that a substantial proportion of cases are considered preventable through measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, and protecting against hepatitis infections.
Beyond phantom shoulder pain, other warning signs to monitor include:
- Feeling full quickly after eating
- Unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal swelling
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
Given that liver cancer is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages, awareness of these early—and sometimes unexpected—symptoms could prove life-saving. Medical scans and timely check-ups remain vital tools for detecting liver problems before they escalate.
