Australian football star Kyra Cooney-Cross has shared devastating personal news, revealing her mother has been diagnosed with an incurable, late-stage cancer.
A Heartbreaking Family Update
The 23-year-old Arsenal and Matildas midfielder took to Instagram to inform followers that her mother, Jess, is battling stage four cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer. Cooney-Cross, who is originally from Queensland, posted a poignant photograph of herself with her mother in a hospital setting.
"A few days ago, our world changed forever," the footballer wrote in her emotional social media post. She described her mum as her hero, best friend, and the person who shaped every part of her life. "She is the reason I am where I am today," Cooney-Cross stated, highlighting her mother's strength and unwavering belief in her.
Rallying Support from Football Community
In response to the diagnosis, Cooney-Cross has returned home to Australia to be with her family, including her younger sisters. The family are reportedly still in shock and processing the weight of the news.
A GoFundMe page has been established to provide financial support for Jess's care and the family during this challenging time. The football world has swiftly mobilised to offer messages of solidarity and love.
Her international and club teammates flooded the comments section of her post with support. Matildas and Arsenal colleague Steph Catley wrote "Love you," while other notable figures like Ella Toone, Caitlin Foord, and Australian captain Sam Kerr sent heart emoji reactions.
Official Club and National Team Backing
Both the Matildas and Arsenal Women's official Instagram accounts posted public messages of support. The Matildas wrote: "Sending all our love to you and your family. We're with you every step of the way."
Arsenal Women added: "Everyone at the club is sending all the love and support to you and your family Kyra." This overwhelming show of support underscores the close-knit nature of the women's football community.
Cooney-Cross concluded her update by emphasising the difficulty of the situation, stating that putting her feelings into words felt impossible. The family now faces the immense challenge of navigating the treatment and care for Jess's condition.
