Avocado toast can be transformed from bland to creamy and buttery with a single simple ingredient: salt. According to Elizabeth Lindemann, founder of Bowl of Delicious, seasoning avocado before eating is the key to bringing out its rich, savoury flavour.
Avocado toast has become a breakfast staple, offering a nutritious start to the day. However, the fruit's mild taste and low natural sugar content mean it often requires seasoning to reach its full potential.
Why Salt Is Essential
Lindemann explained that avocado, like many foods, needs salt to enhance its flavours. She compared it to chicken broth, which tastes bland without salt but becomes delicious when seasoned.
Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats, which support heart health. Salt helps cut through this fat content, elevating the fruit's natural creamy and subtly nutty taste.
How to Make Better Avocado Toast
Seasoning is crucial for the perfect avocado toast. Adding salt balances the avocado's richness, while a squeeze of lemon juice lifts the flavour and a drizzle of olive oil enhances texture. The entire process takes under five minutes.
Ingredients include two slices of bread, two tablespoons of olive oil, one garlic clove cut in half, one large avocado, two lemon or lime wedges, kosher or sea salt, and optionally one tablespoon of coriander. The method involves toasting the bread, rubbing it with olive oil and garlic, mashing a quarter of the avocado onto each slice, topping with sliced avocado, and finishing with salt, citrus juice, and coriander. The result is a flavourful, satisfying breakfast.
