A woman has defended her decision to start a new relationship while caring for her brain-injured husband, saying she no longer has a marriage. Amanda Robinson, 39, from Prescott, Arizona, was married to Matt, 42, for 15 years before a catastrophic crash in February 2021 left him with life-changing injuries.
Matt's truck was hit by another vehicle, crushing his head and causing a brain injury that affects his vision, personality, memory and behaviour. Amanda, a nurse, cared for him alone for four years before admitting him to a care home. She said: 'I don't have a marriage anymore.'
Amanda met Josh, a 38-year-old country singer, at a local bar. She told him about Matt's condition, and Josh later said he had looked at her Facebook page and thought Matt 'sounded like a great guy'. The pair grew closer, and Josh now helps Amanda care for Matt, forming his own bond with her husband.
Amanda said: 'I did this all by myself for years, and now I have somebody else right there with me. I know that if Matt was aware of what was going on, he wouldn't want me to be his caregiver forever, he’d want me to be happy.' She added that she had not let herself connect with anyone before, as she was dedicated to being a caregiver.
Matt's injuries were so severe that doctors told the family to say their goodbyes. He survived and spent 10 months in hospital. When he came home in December 2021, he could talk, walk and eat, but his condition deteriorated. He now has memory loss, hallucinations and vision problems. Amanda said: 'The hardest part is having to explain to him where he is and what's going on.'
