Donald Trump has announced a significant expansion of his prescription drug website, TrumpRx, claiming the number of medications available through the discount program will increase nearly sevenfold. In a speech on Monday, the former president said his administration was "adding over 600 affordable generics to the website," which he argued would provide consumers with "one source to ensure that they are getting the lowest possible cost on their prescription."
Expansion Details
Trump stated that TrumpRx would "feature the best and lowest prices on prescriptions used by tens of millions of Americans already." He added that, in some cases, the discounted generics available through the site may be offered at an even lower cash price than out-of-pocket insurance costs. The administration is also developing new tools, including a feature to connect patients with the lowest-price pharmacy in their neighborhood or allow discounted prescriptions to be shipped directly to their homes.
New Features
During a presentation, Trump's chief design officer, Joe Gebbia, highlighted a new section called "Presidential Deals," featuring some of the most affordable brand-name drugs. Consumers can now search for brand-name medications and compare them with generic alternatives. Gebbia also introduced a price-comparison tool, stating, "Now you can compare for the best medicine prices, as easy as it is to compare hotels or Airbnbs or baseball tickets."
Expert Concerns
Despite the expansion, some experts argue that TrumpRx is "not a solution" for many patients. Sean Sullivan, a professor of health economics and policy at the University of Washington, noted that consumers could likely obtain cheaper medications through insurance, pharmacies, or cash-pay services like Cost Plus Drugs. Rena Conti, an associate professor at Boston University, echoed these concerns, stating that the platform adds complexity to an already complicated healthcare system.
Earlier this year, experts raised questions about the limited number of drugs initially listed on TrumpRx, suggesting they would appeal to only a small group of patients. The expansion aims to address these concerns, but skepticism remains regarding the site's overall impact on prescription drug affordability.
