Spanish authorities have announced the successful dismantling of a violent Scottish crime syndicate known as the 'Lyons Clan', which had been operating extensively from within Spain. This major breakthrough follows a coordinated international police effort spanning multiple countries and resulting in numerous arrests and significant asset seizures.
International Arrests and Extradition of Alleged Leader
The Civil Guard revealed on Thursday that their Operation Armorum has led to the arrest of fourteen individuals across different nations over the past week. The alleged leader of the criminal organisation, Steven Lyons, aged 45, was apprehended in Indonesia on March 28th. Following his capture, Lyons was transferred to the Netherlands from Indonesia, where Spanish authorities executed a European arrest warrant against him.
It is understood that an additional arrest was made at Dubai International Airport on the same date, March 28th, further highlighting the global reach of this police operation. Turkish police forces also played a crucial supporting role in the investigation, assisting in blocking high-value assets believed to be connected to the Lyons Clan within Turkey.
Extensive Searches and Asset Seizures in Spain
Spanish police conducted a total of eighteen searches in key locations including Costa del Sol and Barcelona. During these operations, authorities seized substantial amounts of money, important documents, expensive luxury items, numerous electronic devices, and cryptocurrency wallets. These seizures represent a significant blow to the financial operations of the criminal network.
The Civil Guard emphasised their close collaboration with Police Scotland throughout the entire investigative process, demonstrating effective cross-border law enforcement cooperation.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard provided detailed insight into the criminal organisation, stating: "Over the course of three decades, the Lyons Clan has evolved into a highly sophisticated criminal structure, characterised by the violence of its actions and its international expansion. Control of the organisation has been maintained within the family nucleus, with a continuous generational change."
The spokesperson further emphasised: "This operation reaffirms the importance of international police and judicial co-operation as an essential tool to combat criminal networks that operate without borders."
