Notorious mob boss Steven Lyons is to challenge his extradition from the Netherlands to Spain. The 46-year-old's lawyer will oppose the move when Lyons appears at Amsterdam District Court on Thursday, with the judge's decision to be published on June 18.
Lyons was arrested in Bali in March after arriving from Singapore, and was repatriated via Jakarta to Amsterdam, where he is currently detained. Indonesian authorities described him as a 'mafia boss and Interpol fugitive'.
Spanish police claim they have 'smashed' the Lyons crime clan operation as part of Operation Armorum. Fourteen associates were arrested across four countries, including eight men in Scotland, while 20 individuals remain under investigation. Assets including cryptocurrency wallets, high-end watches and large sums of cash were seized, and police in Turkey located and froze assets linked to the network. Spanish investigators estimate Lyons laundered upwards of £26 million.
Lyons' wife Amanda was also arrested at Dubai Airport days after her husband's detention, flagged by a Interpol Red Notice. The arrests follow a series of raids on the Costa Del Sol, including a pub linked to the assassination of Lyons' brother Eddie Jnr and Ross Monaghan last year. Spanish police attribute the killings to a turf war between rival Glasgow gangs.
