Italian toddler dies after receiving frostbitten heart transplant, six medics investigated
An Italian toddler has tragically died after receiving a heart transplant where the donor organ is suspected to have been critically damaged by frostbite during transportation. Two-year-old Domenico passed away on Saturday morning following an irreversible worsening of his clinical condition, after being on life support for two months.
Investigation launched into transport methods
Prosecutors have launched a formal investigation with six medical professionals under scrutiny amid suspicions that the donor heart was mistakenly transported in dry ice at -80°C rather than regular ice, causing significant tissue damage. The organ was transported approximately 490 miles from Bolzano in the Italian Alps to Monaldi Hospital in Naples.
Family lawyer Francesco Petruzzi confirmed the devastating news, stating: "It's over. Domenico is gone." He revealed that the heart arrived "burned by frostbite" and that a foundation would be established in Domenico's name to support children who cannot receive transplants and victims of medical malpractice.
Desperate wait for donor heart
Domenico was born with cardiomyopathy, a degenerative disease that thickens the heart wall until it can no longer pump blood effectively. After a prolonged wait on the transplant list, a donor heart became available in December from a four-year-old boy who had drowned in a swimming pool in Bolzano.
The transplant procedure took place on December 23 at Monaldi Hospital, but the heart never functioned properly. Domenico's mother, Patrizia Mercolino, recalled being told after the operation: "There is a problem — the heart does not start."
Transportation concerns and desperate appeals
Investigators suspect the heart was packed in an ordinary plastic box without a thermostat to monitor temperature during transportation. The use of dry ice at -80°C rather than regular ice would have caused severe damage to the delicate organ tissue.
As Domenico remained on life support, his mother made emotional public appeals for help, including directly to Pope Francis to assist in finding another heart for her son. She told Italian television: "My life is now dominated by pain and the desire to have my baby back home. I appeal to the Pope to help find a new heart for my son. That's all I want."
Medical complications and final prognosis
Ms. Mercolino also instructed her lawyer to contact hospitals across Europe in search of a second heart. However, on Wednesday, a panel of paediatric specialists concluded Domenico's condition was "not compatible" with another transplant attempt.
Doctors had warned that prolonged use of the life support system might have compromised Domenico's lungs, liver, and kidneys. Tragically, this prognosis proved accurate, and Domenico lost his battle on Saturday morning.
National response and calls for accountability
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed national mourning, stating: "The whole of Italy mourns the loss of little Domenico, a warrior who will never be forgotten." She offered condolences to Domenico's parents and expressed confidence that authorities would fully investigate the incident.
Italy's Health Minister Orazio Schillaci emphasized the need for clarity, saying: "We must absolutely clarify what happened. We owe it to the child, to the family, but also to all Italians." He maintained that Italy has an excellent national health service that typically handles complex situations effectively.
The grieving mother has not spoken publicly since Domenico's death, but through her lawyer, she has committed to establishing a foundation in his memory to support other families facing similar medical challenges and to advocate for accountability in healthcare.
