Terminally Ill Patients Share Pearls of Wisdom in Marie Curie Campaign
Nurses from the end-of-life charity Marie Curie have shared poignant life advice given to them by their patients as part of a new fundraising initiative. The campaign highlights the profound insights from individuals facing terminal illnesses, offering guidance on living fully and meaningfully.
Living in the Moment and Letting Go
Among the key pieces of wisdom shared is the importance of living in the moment and letting go of grudges. Patients emphasised that holding onto anger or resentment can detract from the precious time one has, urging others to forgive quickly and express their feelings openly.
Marie Curie nurse Ashleigh Wood explained, "Spending time with people in their final days gives you a very clear sense of what really matters. We often hear patients talk about wanting to forgive more quickly, to say the things they feel and not leave words unsaid."
Advice on Work, Memories, and Money
Other advice includes:
- Not working so hard that you miss out on life.
- Cherishing memories with loved ones.
- Using money to create happy memories rather than saving all of it for a rainy day.
The charity noted that these reflections stem from patients' experiences, highlighting a shift in priorities towards personal fulfilment and relationships over material concerns.
Self-Care and Identity
Wood added that for many patients, small acts of self-care, such as brushing their hair or wearing a favourite lipstick, serve as important rituals. These actions are not about vanity but about maintaining identity, dignity, and doing things that make them feel good. "We also hear reminders to take pride in who you are and not lose the things that make you feel like yourself," she said.
Campaign Launch and Fundraising Goals
The campaign, titled Purchase For Marie Curie Nurses, runs from April 22 to May 19. It involves a partnership with Superdrug, where proceeds from select products will be donated to fund the charity's end-of-life care services. Capital radio DJ Kemi Rodgers met with nurses at a Superdrug store in London, where placards displayed the patients' wisdom.
Rodgers commented, "Having previously worked in healthcare, I know that one of the most striking parts is hearing the quiet wisdom people share with those around them in life's most important moments. Marie Curie nurses witness moments like this every day through their invaluable work, so I was keen to meet them and find out more."
Further Wisdom from Patients
Additional advice shared includes:
- Do not let worrying rob you of the time you have.
- Never go to sleep on an angry word.
The campaign aims to raise £200,000, which the charity estimates will fund more than 8,500 hours of its essential work, providing care and support to those at the end of life and their families.
