Three years after the death of motorcyclist Harry Dunn, a US citizen has admitted responsibility. Anne Sacoolas was handed an eight-month jail term, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.
Harry Dunn, 19, died on 27 August 2019 in a crash near RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire. Sacoolas's car struck his motorbike moments after she left the base, driving on the right side of the road instead of the left.
Sacoolas initially claimed diplomatic immunity because her husband worked for a US intelligence agency. She left the UK, and the US government rejected extradition requests. The family campaigned for justice, meeting then-President Donald Trump and later UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
A change in UK law allowed Sacoolas to appear via video-link from the US. She pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on 20 October 2022, bringing closure to the family after a long legal battle.
