Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41, of Flint Township, Michigan, have been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture after their seven-year-old son Casper died weighing 255 pounds. The boy passed away from heart failure on 4 November 2025, with an autopsy listing dilated cardiomyopathy with morbid obesity as a contributing factor.
Child Never Attended School and Lacked Medical Care
Authorities responded to a 911 call about Casper's deteriorating condition at the family's run-down home, described as a hoarding situation. The child was taken to hospital but could not be saved. Prosecutor David Leyton of Genesee County stated, "On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents. That is obesity. This child did not have a pediatrician, was only taken to the doctor, I believe ... once."
Casper was 4 feet 2 inches tall at the time of his death. According to CDC guidelines, a healthy weight for a boy of that height ranges from 50 to 73 pounds. The boy had never been enrolled in school, and his five-year-old sister Illeana also had no school attendance or regular medical checkups. The family home was in a hoarding condition, and neither child was known to child protective services.
Parents Called Vet for Dog on Morning of Son's Death
Prosecutor Leyton revealed that on the morning Casper died, the parents contacted their dog's veterinarian for treatment, but had not sought medical help for their son earlier. "None of these kids even existed in the eyes of the government. CPS had never been out there, nobody knew about these kids, they had not been to school," Leyton said. He added, "I can't think of what else this is, other than extraordinary, terrible neglect. And to me, that is willful and wanton misconduct, which is second-degree murder."
Despite the neglect, Damien O'Brien held a stable job with health insurance, according to court records. The couple is being held without bond at Genesee County Jail, with their next court appearance scheduled for 2 July.
Memorial Described Boy as Bright and Loving
A memorial page for Casper, listing his funeral on 6 November 2025, portrayed him as a warm and cheerful child. "Casper was a bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him. He loved watching Super Monsters, especially his favorite character, Frankie Mash," the site said. The case has drawn widespread attention due to the extreme level of neglect and the child's preventable death.
