Two young people being treated for meningitis in Reading are pupils at local schools, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed. Three cases have been identified in the Reading area, including a student at Henley College in Oxfordshire who has sadly died.
Details of the Cases
The UKHSA revealed that the other two cases involve pupils at Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre. All three individuals are receiving medical care, and authorities are working closely with the affected schools to provide support and guidance.
Strain Not Linked to Previous Outbreaks
Confirmed testing on one of the cases has shown that it is not the same strain of meningitis B responsible for earlier outbreaks this year in Kent and Dorset, the agency said. This suggests the current cases are isolated, though investigations remain ongoing.
Meningitis is usually caused by bacteria or a viral infection and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, and a distinctive rash. Health officials urge anyone with concerns to seek medical advice immediately.
