A student from Henley College in Oxfordshire has tragically died from meningitis, prompting a public health response in the Reading area. Two other pupils, one from Reading Blue Coat School and another from Highdown Secondary School, are currently receiving treatment for the illness.
UKHSA Response and Precautionary Measures
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed that close contacts of the affected individuals have been offered antibiotics as a precautionary measure. Tests indicate that the current infection is not the same strain of meningitis B that caused a fatal outbreak in Kent earlier this year.
Expert Commentary on Transmission Risks
Dr Rachel Mearkle from UKHSA explained that meningococcal meningitis requires very close contact to spread, emphasising that the risk to the wider public remains low. Information on meningitis symptoms has been shared with parents and students at the affected schools, urging rapid medical attention if concerns arise.
The affected schools are cooperating fully with health authorities to monitor the situation and provide support to students and staff.
