NHS Urges Simvastatin Users to Call 111 for Skin Symptom of Liver Damage
NHS: Simvastatin Users Should Call 111 for Skin Symptom

The NHS is urging individuals taking simvastatin, a widely used cholesterol-lowering medication, to contact emergency services by dialling 111 if they observe a specific skin symptom that could indicate liver damage. This warning comes as part of the health service's ongoing efforts to educate patients about potential serious side effects associated with the drug.

What is Simvastatin?

Simvastatin belongs to a class of medications known as statins, which are prescribed to manage high cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Approximately seven million people in the UK take statins. Doctors may also prescribe simvastatin for individuals with diabetes, kidney disease, or familial hypercholesterolaemia, a genetic condition that leads to elevated cholesterol.

Common Side Effects

Like all medicines, simvastatin can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common but less serious side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, or flatulence, muscle aches, and sleep problems. The NHS advises that simvastatin typically does not affect the ability to drive, cycle, or operate machinery, but patients should wait until any dizziness subsides before engaging in such activities. If side effects persist or become troublesome, patients should consult a pharmacist or GP for advice on managing them.

Serious Side Effects and Warning Signs

The NHS warns that simvastatin can sometimes cause serious side effects, though most are rare. One such side effect is hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, which can lead to jaundice—a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. However, the NHS notes that yellowed skin may be harder to detect in individuals with brown or black skin. The health body advises people to call 111 immediately if they suspect they are experiencing serious side effects while taking simvastatin.

Other Potential Serious Side Effects

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which can cause severe stomach pain
  • Inflammation and damage to the muscles (muscle toxicity), leading to symptoms such as muscle cramps, pain, and weakness
  • An allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which may present as a swollen throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash, or difficulty breathing
