NHS opens winter jab bookings for North East at-risk groups

Thousands of people across the North East and North Cumbria can now book their free winter vaccinations online, as the NHS prepares for seasonal pressures. The booking system is open for those most at risk of serious illness from flu and COVID-19.

Eligible individuals will receive invitations by letter, text or email, but do not need to wait before booking. Appointments can be made at participating GP practices, through the NHS App, by calling 119, or online.

Who is eligible for the free jabs?

From 1 October, appointments will also be available at community pharmacies. Those eligible include adults aged 65 and over for flu, children aged 2-3 years for the flu nasal spray, and adults aged 75 and over for both COVID-19 and flu.

Other groups include people living in older adult care homes, those aged 18 months to 64 years with long-term health conditions, people aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed, close contacts of people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, people experiencing homelessness, and frontline health and social care staff.

Vaccinations from September

Flu vaccinations will be available from 1 September for pregnant women, who can receive their vaccine at their GP practice or during a routine antenatal appointment. Children aged two and three can get a free flu nasal spray at their GP practice, while school pupils from reception to year 11 will be offered the vaccine through their school immunisation team.

Ben Anderson, director of population health at NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: "Flu and COVID-19 can cause serious illness, particularly for people who are more vulnerable, and vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect yourself."

He added: "These viruses can spread more easily during the colder months and often peak in December and January. Getting vaccinated from October gives the body time to build up protection before winter."

Advice for those unsure of eligibility

Mr Anderson said: "Some people may not realise they are at greater risk or that they are eligible for a free vaccine. If you are unsure, speak to your GP or midwife, or check the NHS website."

He urged: "Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself from becoming seriously ill this winter. If you are eligible, please take up the offer and get protected as soon as you can."
