The Government has confirmed that NHS Online, a new service providing remote specialist care for nine common conditions, will launch in October 2027. The service will be available through the NHS App, allowing patients to be triaged quickly, consult doctors via video, and be monitored at home.
Conditions Covered by NHS Online
The service will cover severe menopause symptoms, menstrual problems that may indicate endometriosis or fibroids, prostate issues such as enlargement and raised prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, and eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. It will also support patients with iron deficiency anaemia and inflammatory bowel disease.
Patients can choose NHS Online when their GP refers them for specialist care, avoiding the need for in-person appointments or travel to a hospital.
Government Confirmation and Gynaecology Impact
The launch date was confirmed in response to a written parliamentary question from Labour MP Mark Sewards about reducing waiting times for gynaecology appointments. Dame Diana Johnson, MP for Kingston upon Hull North, outlined government actions, noting that as of August 2026, 59.6% of gynaecology pathways were waiting less than 18 weeks, an improvement of 5.4% since the Government took office.
Johnson added that from October 2027, NHS Online will give people on pathways relating to menopause and menstrual problems the choice of receiving specialist care from home, substantially reducing waiting times. She also mentioned plans for integrated care boards to introduce a single point of access for all non-urgent gynaecology referrals, alongside reforms in the Renewed Women’s Health Strategy.
