A beloved NHS theatre nurse tragically died after being kicked in the chest by a horse during a family day out, a coroner's court has heard.
Sarah Jane Evans, 42, who worked at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, was described as a "dedicated and caring" medical professional who was passionate about her work in the operating theatre.
The Fatal Incident
The tragedy occurred on September 21, 2023, while Ms Evans was visiting a friend's property in Llanfair Talhaiarn, Denbighshire. According to the inquest at Ruthin County Hall, the experienced nurse was standing near a stable door when the horse suddenly kicked out, striking her directly in the chest.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite their best efforts and subsequent hospital treatment, Ms Evans succumbed to her injuries five days later at St James's Hospital in Leeds.
A Life of Service Cut Short
Senior coroner for North Wales east and central, John Gittins, recorded a conclusion of accidental death. He noted that Ms Evans had extensive experience with horses and was familiar with handling them safely.
"This was a tragic accident involving someone who was very experienced and knowledgeable around horses," Mr Gittins stated during the proceedings.
Colleagues from the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board paid tribute to Ms Evans, describing her as "highly skilled and much-loved" by both staff and patients. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through the medical community where she was respected for her professionalism and compassion.
Safety Reminders
The incident has prompted fresh discussions about safety around horses, even for experienced handlers. Equine experts note that despite thorough training and familiarity, accidents can occur unexpectedly with these powerful animals.
Ms Evans' family have requested privacy as they come to terms with their devastating loss, while the nursing community mourns one of their own taken too soon.
