NHS AI tool triples stroke recovery rates in England

The NHS has rolled out a revolutionary AI scanning system across all 107 stroke centres in England, tripling the number of patients who recover with no or only slight disability. The technology analyses brain CT scans in under a minute, identifying the type and severity of stroke and the most appropriate treatment. This rapid diagnosis has reduced the average time from hospital arrival to treatment from 140 minutes to 79 minutes.

In NHS pilots, the proportion of patients achieving functional independence jumped from 16% to 48%. The tool, introduced at the European Society of Cardiology congress, promises to transform care for the 80,000 people who have a stroke in England each year. David Hargroves, NHS national clinical director for stroke, said the AI provides real-time interpretation of scans, supporting faster treatment decisions and improving outcomes.

Rapid intervention is critical as stroke patients lose around 2 million brain cells per minute. The AI system can recognise patterns invisible to the human eye, removing uncertainty and delays. Meanwhile, a separate study presented at the congress found that living on a noisy road increases stroke risk by 12.4% even with low air pollution, due to chronic noise disrupting sleep and activating stress pathways.
