Monty Don's Frank Health Update at 70: 'Brutal Truth' Revealed

Monty Don Opens Up About Ageing and Health in Candid Interview

Beloved Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don has delivered a remarkably frank health update at the age of 70, discussing the physical realities of ageing with striking honesty. The renowned horticultural expert, who has guided British gardeners for decades, shared intimate details about his body changes and recent double knee replacement surgery during an interview with The Times.

The 'Brutal Truth' About Body Changes

When questioned about clothing items he cannot wear but refuses to discard, Monty revealed a poignant contrast between his younger self and his current physique. "I have Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto clothes from the Eighties that I haven't worn for 30 years," he confessed. "Would I wear them now? The brutal truth is that, at 70, I'm not quite the same shape as when I was 20. I have to suck my tummy in and hold my breath."

The television personality elaborated on his lifelong appreciation for quality garments, stating he has "always loved good cut and fabrics" to such an extent that he simply cannot "throw away a beautiful jacket or a well-cut shirt." This candid admission highlights the presenter's willingness to address the natural transformations that accompany ageing.

Double Knee Replacement Journey

This health revelation follows previous disclosures about Monty's physical challenges. In his BBC Gardeners' World magazine column, the presenter detailed his years-long struggle with knee problems, ultimately leading to significant surgical intervention.

Monty recounted initially consulting his GP about knee trouble, receiving what he described as a "drily" delivered diagnosis that knees were "appallingly badly designed." The medical advice prescribed painkillers and instructions to cease digging activities, both of which Monty admits he ignored.

"Last summer I finally got round to having scans and seeing a surgeon and was duly told both my knees needed replacing," Monty revealed. "This was a bit of a surprise as I had been working on the assumption that I had one good knee and one bad knee."

Recovery and Future Outlook

Following the double knee replacement procedure, Monty reported significantly improved mobility and expressed optimism about his continuing capabilities. Drawing a parallel with his cherished Land Rover Defender, he remarked: "The important thing...is that I shall be able to do things again, to get stuck in and crack on....with a fair wind and thanks to superb surgical skills, I should, like my beaten-up old Defender, keep ploughing on a bit longer."

Despite recent speculation about potential successors for his gardening television role, Monty addressed his future on Gardeners' World directly. "I'd be very happy to do another five years," he stated last year. "If the BBC renew my contract, I'd happily take it."

Monty Don's candid health discussion provides a rare glimpse into the personal challenges faced by public figures as they age, while simultaneously demonstrating resilience and determination to continue his beloved gardening work for years to come.
