Meningitis Cases Drop in Kent as Vaccination Drive Gains Momentum

Confirmed cases of meningitis in Kent have decreased from 23 to 20, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This decline coincides with a four-day vaccination campaign in the south-east of England, which has administered more than 8,000 vaccines and 12,157 antibiotics to eligible individuals.

Outbreak Details and Response Efforts

The outbreak, which initially saw 34 suspected cases, has now been reduced to 29, with confirmed cases falling from 23 to 20 after further testing. Suspected cases under investigation have also dropped from 11 to nine. Of the 20 confirmed cases, 19 are identified as meningitis B, and all patients have required hospital admission.

Dr Sherine Thomas from UKHSA commented, "It's reassuring to have seen so many eligible young people come forward for antibiotics and vaccination." The campaign, which began earlier in the week, has seen significant public participation, with queues for vaccines shortening considerably since Wednesday. By Sunday morning, there was no queue at the previously busy University of Kent Canterbury campus.

Tragic Losses and Community Impact

The outbreak has tragically claimed two lives: 18-year-old Juliette Kenny and another University of Kent student. Kenny's family described her as "fit, healthy and strong" before her sudden death, highlighting the severe and unpredictable nature of meningitis.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging eligible individuals to seek vaccination and antibiotics to prevent further spread. The rapid response and high uptake of preventive measures are credited with helping to curb the outbreak, though vigilance remains essential.
