Measles Outbreak: Unvaccinated Children Face School Exclusion in London
Measles Outbreak: Unvaccinated Kids Could Be Sent Home

Measles Outbreak Prompts Emergency Health Meeting in London

An emergency meeting of health leaders is scheduled for Monday in London to address what is being described as an unprecedented measles outbreak in the capital. This crisis has already resulted in 100 confirmed cases in north London this year, raising significant concerns about a potential nationwide spread.

School Exclusion Policy for Unvaccinated Children

In response to the escalating situation, unvaccinated children could be sent home from school during measles outbreaks. The borough of Enfield has already implemented this measure, instructing un-jabbed kids not to attend school to curb transmission. Emma Best, the London Assembly health committee lead, emphasized the urgency, stating, "We're looking at this in London but the whole of the UK should be watching now." She highlighted that measles symptoms can initially mimic a common cold, facilitating rapid spread in educational settings.

Declining Vaccination Rates and Historical Context

The policy of excluding unvaccinated pupils may serve as a blueprint for other cities across the UK, as vaccination rates have plummeted over the past decade. This decline is largely attributed to discredited claims from 1998 that falsely linked the MMR vaccine to autism. Latest figures reveal that only 83.7% of five-year-olds have received both MMR doses, marking the lowest coverage since 2009/10. Consequently, the World Health Organisation confirmed that measles had officially re-established itself in the UK from 2024.

Wider Regional Concerns and Public Health Warnings

Other councils, including Southend, have issued warnings to parents about rising measles cases, indicating that the outbreak is likely to reach Essex, Southend, and Thurrock. This regional spread underscores the critical need for increased vaccination efforts and public awareness campaigns to prevent further escalation of the outbreak.
